Wind often blows in the San Luis Valley from the southwest as storms advance from the west and northwest. This creates dusty conditions and is the origin of The Great Sand Dunes southeast of Crestone.

During July and August Crestone is affected by the Wikipedia:North American Monsoon which draws subtropical moisture north from the Gull of Mexico and the Gulf of California into the southwestern United States. This moisture is generally released by brief, frequent thunderstorms.
