Gordon R. Dickson

Gordon R. Dickson (November 1, 1923 - January 31, 2001) was a Canadian science fiction author. Although he was born in Canada, he spent most of his life in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is probably most famous for his Childe Cycle books. He won three Hugo awards. His publisher was Tom Doherty Associates.

Dickson's Childe Cycle Series explores the question; What is the next step of evolution for mankind ? This fictional work takes place in the future when mankind had achieved spaceflight. Though still expensive, spaceflight is not beyond the grasp of the tourist and a handful of planets have been populated. An outpost exists on Earth's moon where a charity - driven foundation has assembled a Final Encyclopedia containing all of man's knowledge. The Encyclopedia is constructed in such a manner that it containes a central chamber. A very few of Dickson's characters experience greatly increased conciousness while standing in the chamber. The experience triggers an increase in awareness with long-lasting effects. In Dickson's work, an unknown is conciousness and it is explored by buiding an encyclopedia, constantly updated, that contains all of man's knowledge.
