Hand to hand combat or close combat is combat or violence between people carried on at close quarters. It may include the use of weapons such as knives or bayonets. Used in war when other forms of combat are impossible or impractical, hand to hand combat is avoided by most civilians but sometimes engaged in by children who, lacking skill, seldom hurt one another.
Adults of the lower class, especially when inebriated, sometimes engage in hand to hand combat. In that context it is sometimes tolerated provided serious injuries do not result.
Hand to hand combat is also engaged in as sport or as a hobby. Specialized forms of hand to hand combat incude judo, karate, boxing and wrestling.
