The Huerfano Valley is an isolated area on the eastern slope of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Southern Colorado near Walsenburg, Colorado. The central village is Gardner, Colorado with tiny auxiliary villages of Red Wing, Colorado and Malachite, Colorado. In the early days the road through the valley over Mosca Pass was the main route to the San Luis Valley, but that pass is only a jeep trail now. The Huerfano valley is notable in recent history for the alternative communities which were established there in the 1970s, Libre Commune, Red Rockers and Triple A and for the community centered around them.
