A software developer is an entity, either a company or individual, that creates software.

A software development company, such as Red Hat or MySQL AB, can also be referred to as a software developer, and can employ many individual software developers. Sometimes individuals are referred to by the term "programmer", or even "hacker", though these terms are usually not favored by them in the field, and commonly use the term "developer" to describe themselves.
