The Alamo is the shortened name for the Spanish colonial mission in San Antonio, Texas named Mision San Antonia de Valero built in 1724, which was the scene of the Battle of the Alamo in March 1836 between the Mexican Army and rebellious Anglo-Saxon settlers in Mexican Texas. The settlers lost the battle but their defeat became the subject of a rallying cry, "Remember the Alamo" for a counterattack by Sam Houston's army which won the Texas War of Independence. Like "Remember the Maine," "Remember Pearl Harbor," and, more recently, "Remember 9/11," "The Alamo" serves as a reference to American patriotic renewal through redemptive, purifying violence.
