The Tiananmen Square Massacre was the killing of pro-democracy protesters in and near Tiananmen Square by the People's Liberation Army during the night of June 3-4, 1989. Several hundred students and citizens are believed to have been killed, many in the Square and many at the present site of the Beijing McDonalds, which was then a vacant lot.
