Uttar Pradesh is one of the states of India. The capital is Lucknow, other notable cities include Ayodhya, Kanpur, Benares and Deoband. Neighbouring states are Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar. Uttar Pradesh has also a border with Nepal.
Uttar Pradesh covers a large part of the densely populated plains around the Ganges. With 170 million inhabitants, it is the most populous state in India.
