Study Technology is methods of study and is a portion of the Scientology philosophy. The Church of Scientology teaches it as a pre-requisite for its advanced studies. Applied Scholastics teaches it in selected schools and other situations. It consists of information about study, and methods of study. It was developed by L. Ron Hubbard because he found that his students had some difficulties with study. The church claims it is more effective than other methods. It differs from traditional methods in some particulars.

Hubbard defined "old-fashioned" education as "placing data in the recall of others".[1] He found this educational product insufficient because Scientology, he said, is more than fifty percent application. When a student places data into recall, he is not necessarily able to take his date from recall and apply it. By Hubbard's methods, students demonstrate application of data as it is learned. According to Hubbard there is a significant difference between data in recall and easily applied, understood knowledge.

Hubbard defined a study as "a concatenation of certainties, it is a string of certainties". [2] With the former definition (memorizing data to recall it later) the student will be able to remember data, but might not be able to apply it. With the latter, a student will have created applications for the data as he learned it, ensuring that he understands it and its application. A students demonstrates application to their own satisfaction as they learn it. At certain points in a course, a student demonstrates application to a supervisor's satisfaction.

A student practices data application with the smallest bit of new data. For new symbols, a student creates hypothetical uses. For words, a student makes up sentences using, first, the definition in question. And then the other definitions of the word. [3] Sketches and demonstrations in clay are used for ideas. For a complex datum, students demonstrate application to a supervisor's satisfaction. A student sees something he doesn't understand and learns it by mental or physical demonstration. Concepts involving an activity are drilled. One example is the acknowledgement of a communication. A student receives a communication and acknowledges it until he can acknowledge a communication naturally.

History

Hubbard began Dianetics about 1948 and introduced his ideas to the public about 1950. To put his ideas into public practice, Hubbard established the First Dianetics Foundation which taught his methods. But Hubbard found the students of the First Foundation did not achieve uniform results. People that he did not personally teach did not achieve results. In 1955 he addressed the area of how to communicate a skill to another person. It was then that he introduced his new study method. In 1964 he expanded on his 1955 statements. The Church uses his methods today. A number of Hollywood stars have applauded Scientology's study methods, saying those methods have helped them in their careers. As one example, Tom Cruise made such a statement. [4]
