If a farmer can bypass the fair trade buying and merchandizing system they can sometimes make more money. Thrive Farmers Coffee, a cooperative in Central America which roasts and markets the coffee they grown is an example of an enterprise which realizes about twice what they would by simply selling green beans at the fair trade price.
