Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are plants or animals which have an added characteristic resulting from deliberate genetic manipulation. As genes from viruses or bacteria are often added to food plants GMOs are inherently scary but are considered safe by scientists. The most common modification is to make a food crop such as soybeans resistant to a herbicide such as Roundup a product of Monsanto, a chemical company. Monsanto, which is quite aggressive in protecting its patents and profits, is an easy target for scapegoating as a symbol of abusive capitalism.

As a consequence crops such as Golden Rice, rice modified to include Vitamin A, have had a difficult time coming to market or achieving acceptance.
