Jade is a gem favored by Chinese and other Asian people. Some jade is mined in appalling condition in Myanmar and is the subject of international sanctions. Jade, in the form of jadeite, is a rather common rock which can be mined, as of 2013, at the cost of about $500 a ton. It retails at over $100,000 a ton with the difference going to taxes, corruption, and middle men, as well as to craftsman and artists who make jewelry and artifacts from it.
