Wood used as lumber for building or making furniture is often produced illegally, moving in large quantities in international trade, particularly to China.[1]

Regulation in Europe is by the European Union's 2003 Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade Action Plan and the EU Timber Regulation. In the United States imports of timber is governed by the 2008 Amendment to the Lacey Act.

Rosewood, which is in great demand in China is particularly exploited in southeast Asia and Africa.
