Manufactures of Clothing, and the garment industry, generally, has a long history of exploitation and abysmal, even life-threatening, working conditions. The Sustainable Apparel Coalition, formed in 2011, is an industry group with plans to rate products using a "Higg Index which as of May, 2013 was for internal use only."[1]

Following the 2013 collapse of a flimsy garment factory in Bangladesh that killed 800 people, a few clothing manufacturers began disclosing information about where and how their products were made.[1] According to Bruno Pieters, founder of Honest By, “as long as we keep paying companies to be unsustainable and unethical, they will be.”[1]
