Emiliano Zapata Salazar 1879–1919. He was a leading figure in the Mexican Revolution of 1910 against the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz. He is one of the national heroes of Mexico. Emiliano Zapata formed and commanded Liberation Army of the South, more commonly known as the Zapatistas, in 1910 until his death on April 9th 1919 after being tricked and ambushed by a pro-Díaz General who had told him he wanted to change sides. The Zapatistas, a revolutionary movement based in the state of Chiapas, are named after him.
