A military dictatorship is a dictatorship ruled by either a single military officer serving as an absolute dictator, or by a military junta consisting of a few prominent members of the army. Military dictatorship is the type of dictatorship commonly seen in capitalist states, as capitalist dictators often gained power in a military coup, and afterwards refused to give the power away to civilian rulers.

Military dictatorships are often totalitarian, and are considered worst than other types of dictatorships. This is largely because in a military dictatorship, there is no parliament, as the junta serves as the only ruling body of the country. The military typically uses fear to keep in power, and often, the military takes over the role of the police in the country.

Most military dictators gained powers in coups backed by the U.S. intelligence agency CIA.
