Intersectionality (or intersectional theory) is the study of overlapping or intersecting social identities and related systems of oppression, domination, or discrimination.

People or groups may be part of more than one, or even many, social identities which affect their consciousness and life chances. A simple example is the differences between the social situation of a working class African-American woman and that of an upper class Anglo-Saxon Protestant woman.

There is an extended treatment of intersectionality at Wikipedia:Intersectionality.
